A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. 

'Black or African American' refers to a person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.

The category Hispanic or Latino refers to the ethnicity of a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. People who identify with the terms "Hispanic" or "Latino" identify as belonging in the Census categories of "Mexican, Mexican Am., Chicano" or "Puerto Rican" or "Cuban"—as well as those who indicate that they are "another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin."

A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.

Median income by household. Income refers to income for "the last 12 months" prior to the survey response.

Percentage of households that fall below the income threshold determined to be the threshold designated as the poverty line according to the size and type of household. Income includes earnings, monetary benefits such as unemployment and Social Security payments, payments such as alimony and child support, and other sources of income. Income does not include capital gains or losses, noncash benefits such as food stamps and housing subsidies, or tax credits.

Percent of households living in owner-occupied housing. According to the Census, a housing unit is owner occupied if the owner or co-owner lives in the unit, even if it is mortgaged or not fully paid for. The owner or co-owner must live in the unit. The unit also is considered owned with a mortgage if it is built on leased land and there is a mortgage on the unit. Mobile homes occupied by owners with installment loan balances also are included in this category.

Median home loan rate for originated home purchase loans.

Percentage of household income spent on energy costs. The percentage is calculated by dividing the average housing energy cost by the average annual household income. Energy costs include the amount spent on electricity, gas, and other fuels, including oil and wood.

Percent bachelor degree or higher is the percentage of population that has completed a bachelor's, master's, professional or doctorate degree.

Percent of households that have at least one internet subscription for cable internet, fiber optic or digital subscriber line (DSL), cellular data plan, satellite, fixed wireless subscription or other non-dial-up subscriptions.

Businesses that are self-identified as Black owned as of data ingestion. Data is gathered from records from disbursement of funds for the Paycheck Protection Program, which ended in 2022, and Yelp business records. The data are then combined. The Black Wealth Data Center does not make determinations to see if businesses are still in operation or still Black owned.

The social vulnerability index uses 16 Census Bureau variables to identify communities that may need support in advance of, or to recover from, natural, economic or health-related disasters. Possible scores range from 0 (lowest vulnerability) to 1 (highest vulnerability).

The business investment need index was developed by DataKind in partnership with Black Wealth Data Center to reveal areas that have suffered underinvestment and that would benefit from more resources to fund businesses and other amenities. The index score for each tract is derived from nine data points: Count of Community Development Financial Institutions and Minority Depository Institutions; Ratio of approved Paycheck Protection Program loan amounts to Black or African Americans to approved Paycheck Protection Program loan amounts to White borrowers; Percent Black or African American population; Ratio of median Black or African American household income to median White household income; Count of businesses; Location within HUD Opportunity Zone; Walkability index; Unemployment rate; Redlining score. Each indicator is standardized and given equal weighting. Census tracts are ranked by how they score on this index. A Census tract is marked as a business need priority area if it falls within the upper quartile of tracts within a city.

Air quality index (AQI) as determined by concentration of PM2.5 air particles. Days above 50 AQI for Environmental Protection Agency sensors are calculated directly from 24-hour AQI sensor data. Days above 50 AQI for PurpleAir data use ALT cf=3 sensor data and apply AQI calculation formula, current as of 2024. Sensors that report more than 25 days of AQI index over 50 in the previous 12 months are marked 'AQI bad' in the Local Wealth Explorer, while other sensors are marked 'AQI good.'

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, and per account ownership category. FDIC-insured financial institutions include all covered institutions and their branches.

Minority depository institutions are banks where socially and economically disadvantaged individuals have majority ownership.

Broadband access

Percent of households that have at least one non-dial-up internet subscription, such as cable internet, fiber optic, cellular data plan, satellite or fixed wireless subscription.

Black-owned business count

Businesses that self identify as Black owned. Data is obtained from combining information on Black businesses from Yelp and the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program data.

Business investment index

The business investment index uses data such as unemployment rate and historical redlining to highlight areas that could benefit most from capital investment today. A higher percentile rank indicates more impact could be unlocked by investing in these underfunded areas.

Social vulnerability index

Social vulnerability measures the likelihood a community faces negative consequences from environmental, economic or health-related disasters, with a higher score reflecting greater risk.

Air quality index

This metric measures how many days nearby sensors recorded air quality levels over 50, the threshold at which sensitive groups can begin to be affected by pollutants. Air quality index (AQI) is determined by concentration of PM2.5 air particles.
